Class Descriptions

1) Rang 1 (Introductory) is a 6-week course for those who have never learned Irish. It is a fun yet challenging introduction to conversational Irish. By the end of this course students will be able to introduce themselves and talk about their family life, where they live, occupation, likes/dislikes, hobbies, numbers, tell the time, days of the week and more.

2) Rang 2 classes provide a foundation in a range of conversational topics. Anyone who has attended Rang 1 may enroll in any of the Rang 2 courses. Course content (A – C, formerly referred to as Rang 2, 3, 4) will rotate throughout the teaching year. Topics:

Rang 2A: Prepositions, Emotions, Weather, The Verbal Noun, Food and Drink.

Rang 2B: Months & Seasons, Short Films, News, Possessive Adjectives, The Present Tense.

Rang 2C: Descriptions, Biography, My House, Looking for Things, My Body, Aches and Pains.

3) Students are advised to complete all Rang 2 classes (A – C) before advancing to the Ard Rang A1 (Advanced Class). The Ard Ranganna are conducted almost entirely through the medium of Irish, and follow the TEG  (Teastas Eorpach na Gaeilge/The European Certificate in Irish) syllabus, as developed by The Language Centre in NUI Maynooth, Ireland. The TEG is a system of certification for adult learners of Irish. If a student decides that they would like to take the TEG test, the nearest testing centre is in New York, and examinations take place every April/May.

If you would like to work towards sitting the TEG A1 exam (in 2013 or 2014) then you should opt for Ard Rang A1. If you have taken the TEG A1 exam or you have previously studied Irish to an intermediate level, then you should opt for Ard Rang A2. In each term, the teacher will facilitate your study of topics related to the TEG exam. Students should download and print out the syllabus for class.

Note: Classes require a minimum of six students. Refunds will only be issued if a course does not run.  If you have any questions regarding a course, please contact us.
