In this video, we’re learning how to say “Happy St. Patrick’s Day!” in Irish.

How to say "Happy St. Patrick's Day!" in Irish

The phrase we use is “Lá Fhéile Pádraig Sona Duit!”. “Lá Fhéile Pádraig” means “St. Patrick’s Day”. “Sona” means “Happy” in English. When saying “to you”, we use either “duit” (singular) or “daoibh” (plural). If you’re speaking to more than one person, you change the phrase slightly, to “Lá Fhéile Pádraig Sona Daoibh!”.

An alternative phrase for March 17th is “Beannachtaí na Féile Pádraig ort”. This means “St. Patrick’s Day blessings on you!” “Beannachtaí” means blessings, and “na Féile Pádraig” means “Patrick’s festival”. For more than one person, we say “Beannachtaí na Féile Pádraig oraibh”.

You Won’t Become Fluent in Irish With Duolingo

Despite its popularity, Duolingo has notable limitations compared with live online instruction. Technology can open access and build foundational skills for Irish learners, but it cannot replace the socially-embedded interaction of successful language learning. Recent research strongly suggests that Duolingo is most effective as a supporting tool rather than a standalone solution. App-based learning cannot provide the corrective feedback and sociolinguistic engagement of class instruction, conversation sessions, workshops or book club meetings.
