Revitalising the Gaeltacht! with Dónall Ó Cnáimhsí
Chuir Acht na Gaeltachta 2012 an dualgas ar phobail na Gaeltachta féin maidir le hathbheochan na Gaeilge. Tá tríocha Oifigeach Pleanála Teanga fostaithe ar fud na tíre anois, agus iad ag cur i bhfeidhm pleananna teanga a dréachtaíodh go sonrach do gach ceantar Gaeltachta. Tá na hoifigigh seo tar éis réimse leathan scéimeanna agus tionscadal a chur ar bun, agus iad ar fad dírithe ar an bpobal áitiúil a spreagadh chun bheith ina laochra teanga.
The 2012 Gaeltacht act put the onus on revitalizing the Irish language on the Gaeltacht community’s themselves. Thirty language planning officers are now employed throughout the country implementing the language plans that were specifically drafted for each particular Gaeltacht area. These people have initiated a wide range of schemes and projects all with the intention of inspiring the local population to become champions of the language. Dónall Ó Cnáimhsí has been involved in this work over the past seven years. In this workshop, he gives an overview of his experiences and challenges as a language officer in the Gaeltacht.
Rugadh agus tógadh Dónall Ó Cnáimhsí i dteaghlach mór Gaeilge i nGaeltacht Dhún na nGall, i nGaoth Dobhair, sa bhliain 1970. Rinne sé a chuid scolaíochta go léir ar an mbunscoil agus ar an mheánscoil trí mheán na Gaeilge. Tar éis dó an scoil a fhágáil, rinne sé staidéar ar ghairneoireacht agus d’oibrigh sé i mBéal Feirste ar feadh roinnt blianta. Le linn a thréimhse ansin, chuaigh gluaiseacht na Gaeilge, a bhí ag dul i méid sa chathair, i bhfeidhm go mór air agus ghlac sé páirt inti. Bhain sé céim le céadonóracha amach sa Ghaeilge agus sa litríocht Ghaeilge in Ollscoil Uladh, agus máistreacht i bpleanáil teanga in Ollscoil na Gaillimhe. D’oibrigh sé ar feadh blianta fada i bPáirc Náisiúnta Ghleann Bheatha. Tá sé pósta agus beirt pháistí aige, agus tá cónaí air i nGaoth Dobhair. Le seacht mbliana anuas tá sé fostaithe mar oifigeach pleanála teanga don cheantar.
