This workshop will discuss the development of Standard Irish in the context of dialectal diversity and language ideologies (our beliefs about language). What is the CaighdeĂĄn OifigiĂșil? Is there a preferred dialect in Irish? Who decides what type of Irish is official and how?

Dr. Jonathan McGibbon is an Irish Language activist from Lurgan, Co. Armagh. He currently works as an Irish Language Officer in local government and as a Part-Time Lecturer in Ulster University. He completed his PhD in Modern Languages and Linguistics with a study of the effectiveness of Irish Language standardization in the context of linguistic ideologies.
