Ar An Lá Seo, 18 Bealtaine: Abraham Lincoln

18 Bealtaine, 1860

Ar an lá seo, 18 Bealtaine, 1860, ainmníodh Abraham Lincoln mar iarrthóir d’Uachtaránacht na Stát thar ceann an Pháirtí Phoblachtaigh.

I dteach admhaid garbhdhéanta i Kentucky a rugadh Abraham Lincoln, 12 Feabhra 1809. Ní raibh puinn oideachais ar a thuismitheoirí, agus ní bhfuair Abe óg mórán scolaíochta ach an oiread. I 1830 d’aistrigh a theaghlach go dtí Illinois.

Chaith Abe scaití mar oibrí báid ar an Mississippi, mar shaighdiúr, mar shiopadóir agus mar fhear poist. I 1832 chuaigh sé leis an bpolaitíocht, agus i 1834 toghadh mar fheisire i nDáil an stáit é.

Go luath ina dhiaidh sin, scar Carolina Theas leis an Aontas, agus ba ghearr go ndearna sé stát dheisceartacha eile an rud céanna.

Idir 1861 agus 1865 bhí Cogadh Cathartha ann idir aon stát deisceartach déag agus an chuid eile den Aontas toisc, i measc nithe eile, na stáit dheisceartacha a bheith i gcoinne na daoir ghorma a shaoradh. Ag na stáit thuaisceartacha a bhí an bua, agus cuireadh an daoirse ar ceal go hoifigiúil ar fud na Stát Aontaithe. Toghadh Lincoln ina Uachtarán don dara huair 8 Samhain, 1864, agus tháinig deireadh leis an gcogadh ar 9 Aibreán, 1865. Cúig oíche ina dhiaidh sin, feallmharaíodh Lincoln in Amharclann Ford, Washington DC.

18 May, 1860

May 18, 1860, Abraham Lincoln was nominated as a candidate for the Presidency of the States on behalf of the Republican Party.

In a rough wooden house in Kentucky, Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809. His parents did not have the means for education, and young Abe did not receive much schooling either. In 1830 his family moved to Illinois.

Abe worked as a boatman on the Mississippi, as a soldier, as a shopkeeper and as a postman. In 1832 he joined politics, and in 1834 he was elected as a member of the Dáil of the state. He married Mary Todd in 1842, and from December 1842 he was a member of the United States Congress.

Lincoln was elected President on November 6, 1860. He took a firm stand againste slavery in the States. Soon after, South Carolina seceded from the Union, and other southern states soon followed suit.

Between 1861 and 1865 there was a Civil War between eleven southern states and the rest of the Union because, among other things, the southern states were against freeing the black slaves. The northern states were victorious, and slavery was officially abolished throughout the United States. Lincoln was elected President for the second time on November 8, 1864, and the war ended on April 9, 1865. Five nights later, Lincoln was assassinated in Ford’s Theatre, Washington DC.

Who was Liam Ó Flaithearta?

Liam Ó Flaithearta (O’Flaherty in English) was a bold voice in early 20th century Irish writing, being a groundbreaking author for both his style and his political views. During his lifetime he achieved many firsts for an Irish novelist and short story writer, including the first Irish anti-war novel, the first serious artistic consideration of the Great Famine, the first (and perhaps only) expressionist play to be written in Irish, and the first book to be banned by the Censorship of Publications Board.
